Hello San Diego!
The 29th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival finishes up this weekend—still plenty of great films to see! The 11th Annual San Diego Arab Film Festival continues this weekend and next at the Museum of Photographic Arts. Next Thursday (3/24), the 9th Annual Borrego Springs Film Festival will get underway with films screening until the following Monday. The 3-day Justice Film Festival also starts on the 24th.
Tonight (Friday), Murder on the Orient Express opens at the Coronado Playhouse. Omo Aché will perform at the Mingei courtesy of the Center for World Music and the Mingei. This concert is sold out, but there are still tickets available for remaining CWM concerts—check the Center for World Music's events page which can be found here.
Saturday, the San Diego Storytelling Festival will take place at the Coronado Library. Culinary Historians of San Diego will present They Came Bearing Bread -- The Hard Lives of the Porteuses de Pain at the SD Central Library. At the Linda Vista Library, the Exploration for a Sustainable World workshop will teach you how to use Google Maps to survey the world to gain insights on how to create a design for a sustainable home. At Agents of Architecture, there will be an opening reception for an Exhibition of Ukrainian Artwork. The Persian Cultural Center will hold their annual Nowruz Celebration at the La Jolla Marriot. Nowruz celebrates the New Year which falls on the first day of spring in Iran and elsewhere. The Selena tribute band, Dreaming of You, will perform at the Pala Events Center. The Laugh Factor will be holding a Latino Night of Comedy.
Sunday, the House of Palestine at the International Cottages will hold their annual Lawn Program with food, music and dance. The Chinese Historical Society will present a virtual talk entitled, Visualizing the Past - John Less’ Depictions of His Holocaust Refuge in Shanghai.
Next Wednesday, UCSD's Shaun Travers will present an online talk titled: Race: Learn, Leverage, Lead with Cultural Competency.
Next Thursday, the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, Warwick's, and the Library Guild of Rancho Santa Fe will host an afternoon with Rebecca Serle as she discusses and signs her new book, One Italian Summer. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will present an online screening of the comedy Croce e Delizia (An Almost Ordinary Summer).
Next Friday, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will perform at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. They will have two additional performances the following day (next Saturday).
Next Saturday afternoon, Encanto will be screened the Manchester Grand Hyatt. At Veterans Park in Imperial Beach, Alana Quintana Albertson will be talking about her new book, Ramón and Julieta. Next Saturday evening, San Diego Opera will stage Roméo et Juliette at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Three more performances will be held the week after.
Next Sunday, there will be a Nowruz Festival in Ruocco Park. The House of Iran at the International Cottages will also hold their annual Lawn Program celebrating Nowruz. Next Sunday evening, Mexican-American singer Ángela Aguilar will perform at San Diego State's Open Air Theatre.
In addition to the shows mentioned above, local theatrical offerings include: Abigail's Party (ends tomorrow) at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center, El Borracho (ends on Sunday) at the Old Globe, and the Great Khan at the Lyceum Theatre.
